Wildlife Control: Miami's Snakes

Wildlife control for coral snakes
When you find a snake, call wildlife control. Some of the snakes in Florida are venomous and should be handled by experts.

Did you know that there is an island on the American continent full of snakes? For every square meter, you find one to five snakes. Kind of a hard-to-control pest, don't you think? It is known as Snake Island and is located about 90 miles from the coast of São Paulo, Brazil. Access to this snake paradise is forbidden by the Brazilian government since even the best wildlife control service would not dare to set foot on the island due to the danger that the amount of venomous snakes in the place represents for human beings.

Although this is not the case in Miami or Florida, the appearance of snakes, whether venomous or not, is a problem that appears in these areas due to the amount of food they can find and the good weather in which they can live and reproduce.

Snakes in Miami
After Texas, Florida is one of the states with most species of snakes. About 50 species inhabit this land and 4 of them are venomous. Why is it precisely here that this large number of these crawling animals can be found? Well, the reality is that Florida and Miami offer the best conditions to host such unwanted guests.

As Miami is close to significant water sources such as lakes and oceans, it provides an excellent source of food, since it is home to lizards, newts, salamanders, frogs, insects, and fish. Likewise, in the more urban area, the city varies the menu and also offers mice, rats and other types of rodents.

As far as the climate is concerned, Florida has a combined atmosphere, ideal for these annoying animals. Hot and dry temperatures mixed with rain and heavy storms from the humid environment that snakes need to live comfortably and enjoy the variety of small animals they can devour.

Venomous snakes in Miami, Florida
As already mentioned, there are four types of venomous snakes in Florida. It is essential that you take into account their characteristics to identify them and get away from them to avoid any bite.

Florida Cottonmouth: this is a semi water-dwelling snake, characterized by its white color inside its mouth and the black and brown patterns on its skin. Sometimes it is confused with other nonvenomous snakes that mimic it for survival or with the Florida common brown water snake.

Coral Snake: it is easily recognizable due to its mix of black and red color and yellow stripes. There are several types of coral snakes; the Eastern Coral and Western Coral are the most dangerous. It is often confused with the Scarlet snake, a nonvenomous snake with a similar color.

Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake: compared to other snakes, this type is tiny, about 22 inches tall. Regarding coloring, it has dorsal rounded black spots and whitish belly. This snake is responsible for most bites in the state; its venom is not lethal, but it is excruciating.

Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake: this is the most significant and most massive rattlesnake species. Its color pattern ranges from brown, brownish-yellow to olive and presents spots in diamond shapes on the skin. Its poison is similar to that of the Florida Cottonmouth and usually uses its loud rattle at the end of its tale to warn anyone who approaches it. It is the deadliest snake in the USA.

Wildlife Control: Snakes
In the rainy season, you may find a snake near or inside your home. To prevent this from happening you can follow several tips. The first is the use of snake traps; these consist of wooden, cardboard or other material boxes with bait, attract dots and glue on the inside. The idea is to draw the snake with the lure, so it stays stuck in the trap because of the glue. This boxes can be bought in different presentations, or you can make them yourself. In these cases, it is always necessary to check the boxes and when you have caught one, call wildlife control experts.

Another of the most effective and frequent tips is the use of snake fences. To prevent snakes from passing to your home, you can use plastic material, catch net fencing and steel mesh. It is necessary for these barriers to surround the entire property, be nailed to the ground without leaving any space between the material and the land, be stable and be unclimbable.

In the end, the best thing you can do if you find a snake in front of you is to step back. Most bites occur because people prefer to deal with the problem on their own, invasively and aggressively. It is best to call wildlife control services to avoid any inconvenience.
